Write down the essentials

A useful shortlist starts with the people and equipment in the group. Note the size of the tent or vehicle, the number of occupants and any access requirements. If you need power, a shower or a particular type of toilet, make that a booking question rather than a hope.

Read the individual site description and campground map together. The map may explain the route to facilities or how pitches are arranged; it cannot confirm every surface condition or tell you how a site will feel on a busy weekend. Ask the operator when a detail will determine whether you can stay.

Compare three different styles

• Lake-focused: investigate Lake Waramaug if time by the water is the main attraction.
• Park activities: compare Black Rock for a visit built around its pond and trail options.
• Rustic: read Macedonia Brook carefully before assuming conventional campground services.

Look beyond the nightly price

Check the final total, minimum stay, cancellation terms and arrival arrangements. A cheaper pitch is not a better choice if it cannot take your equipment or leaves you without a facility you depend on. Compare the same dates and party details when looking at alternatives.

Pets need a specific check. Permission on a park trail does not automatically extend to its campground or beach. Never carry one park’s policy over to another.

Book the pitch, then the weekend

Once the booking is confirmed, choose nearby outings. Do not reserve a remote pitch simply to fit a route drawn before you knew where you could stay. Leave room for groceries, setup and the drive home.
